Niners traded up to No. 3 out of fear Patriots would beat them to Mac Jones

The San Francisco 49ers traded up to No. 3 in this past NFL draft because they feared the New England Patriots would beat them to Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Niners suspected that the Patriots were interested in drafting Jones so they decided to make a move and put themselves in a safe position to draft Jones.

After everything done, the Niners had a change of heart and used their No. 3 pick to select Trey Lance out of North Dakota State University.

Jones ultimately fell to No. 15 and the Patriots ended up with the Alabama quarterback.
