Patriots HC Bil Belichick: Vaccination status played no part in Cam Newton’s release

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick insists that Cam Newton’s vaccination status played no factor in him being released.

On Tuesday, the Patriots cut 2015 NFL MVP Newton, naming rookie Mac Jones their starting quarterback for Week 1.

Last week, Newton was away from the Patriots for five days because of what the team called a COVID-19 protocol “misunderstanding.”

Newton missed three practices during the strecth, allowing Jones to take over the team.

“No. Look, you guys keep talking about that,” Belichick told reporters on Wednesday morning, per ESPN.

“I would just point out that I don’t know what the number is, but the number of players, coaches and staff members that have been infected by COVID in this training camp — who have been vaccinated — is a pretty high number. So I wouldn’t lose sight of that.”
