Patriots’ Mac Jones not surprised he beat out Cam Newton for starting quarterback job

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones insists he wasn’t surprised he won the starting quarterback job.

Last week, the Patriots cut 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton and named Jones their starting quarterback for Week 1.

Jones impressed during the preseason but still Newton was expected to be the starter in Week 1.

“Not really,” Jones said, when asked if he was surprised by winning the Patriots’ starting quarterback job. “Like I always say, I prepare to be the starter. I got a chance to get a lot of reps. Nothing really changes. Just trying to be a good teammate, trying to learn the plays every day, fix what I messed up on and listen to [offensive coordinator] Josh [McDaniels] and all the guys in the quarterback room and take the advice.”
